SEM FAQs

What are Google Ads?

Google Ads are an invaluable way to promote your business across the entirety of the Google network. They can come in multiple forms, including Paid search ads (PPC), Display ads and Video ads.

Paid search ads, also known as Pay Per Click (PPC) Ads are ads that appear at the top of Google’s search engine. This strategy is also known as Search Engine Marketing (SEM). These are predominantly text ads that appear above organic results. You have the ability to choose when your ads appear by selecting the most relevant keywords to match your product or service offering.

Display ads are image ads that appear across the Google Display Network (GDN). The GDN is a collection of over 2 million sites that you can access at the touch of a button to advertise your business. This collection of sites includes both video and app placements.

Video ads are as they sound. These consist of video content that is promoted across the Google Display network. You can opt to promote your video content across the whole GDN or you can select just YouTube depending on what suits your campaign strategy.

What is PPC?

PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising is an invaluable way to promote your business across the google ads network via their search engine. You can create ads that will appear when users search for specifically chosen keywords. These keywords can be single words or multi word phrases (also known as long tail keywords). Google gives you the option to set specific ‘bid’ amounts which refers to how much you are willing to pay per click. These bid amounts can also be set on the amount that you are willing to pay for impressions or conversions.

Based on these settings, your ads will then appear when people search for your pre-determined keywords.

How much does Google Ads cost?

There is no direct answer to this question. However, the good news is that you are in total control of how much you spend. Once you set up your free Google Ads account you can set your daily budget for each paid search campaign. There are additional safeguards such as account level budgets which you can set, along with time frames, to ensure that you do not spend more than you are prepared to over a certain period.

Google Search ads, also known as Pay Per Click (PPC) ads are only charged for when someone clicks on your ad. The amount that you pay is determined by several factors. These include the competitiveness of your industry, the bidding strategy that you have chosen and your quality score. Your quality score is determined by Google based on the relevancy of your ads and their associated landing pages. You can also set target cost per clicks (CPC’s) to limit the amount that you pay for each click. This can be any amount and is based on how valuable a click through to your site is to you.

Does Google Ads effect SEO?

There are no downsides to having a paid search and organic (SEO) strategy at the same time. At Yango we believe that a blended search strategy is the best approach.

Having an effective paid search and search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy running at the same time means that you are able to appear more than once in a single search. This means that your business occupies more of the search engine real estate and increases the likelihood that users will click on your link rather than a competitor.

A well-managed paid search account can provide valuable keyword insights that can then be utilised in your SEO strategy. As we begin to see improvements in performance from SEO, we are then able to drive cost-efficiencies in paid search without any negative effects to its performance. Effectively, having both strategies running at the same time can be an effective way to improve the performance of search as a channel overall.
